QR Codes

Quick Response codes have been around for a number of years.  However, within the last twelve months I have seen the usage of QR codes take off at an insurmountable rate.  I believe this increase in usage is due to the increasing popularity of Smart Phones and their applications that allow users easier access.  I believe that QR codes can be used in my library in numerous ways.

First and foremost QR codes can allow my patrons easier access to information.  Among them, QR codes can allow my patrons to download text message reference services into their phone.  QR codes can also be put on end stacks to lead my patrons to subject guides on the web, saving them a large amount of time. Another way in which QR codes can be used to increase information is by adding them to the library catalog which will aid them in browsing the physical book collection.

QR codes can allow my patrons to increase their amount of information provided.  One way to accomplish this is to put QR codes on DVD's and audio books to point users to video trailers. This will allow my patrons the ability to make decisions based on their interests. QR codes can linked to real time searches of the library catalog to provide information on songs, videos and websites.  QR codes can also provide additional information on promotional posters allowing my patrons access to a wealth of information.

Lastly, QR codes can be used as incentives to my students and/or patrons to increase interest in the library.  QR codes can be used for contests.  They can be used for library audio tours allowing patrons to become aware of items and services available within the library.

With the ever increasing amount of technology, the uses of QR codes will continue to expand.  Patrons will have easier access to large amounts of additional new information.  They will also be able to use QR codes to keep maintain their interest level.  It will be exciting to see the future uses of QR codes as they become accessible to more and more patrons every day.  Head out and check out QR codes at your local library!
